How I quit smoking

As a teenager I worked at Mc Donald’s in Glendale.  I started smoking on my break in lieu of eating and my addiction started.  Several times I tried to quit but typically never was able to stop smoking for even a day.  I once quit for two years and then had just the one cigarette with a friend and started up again.

My husband George sells industrial sewing machines to the garment industry and earns lots of airline miles. Nearly four years ago, a friend and I decided to visit a girlfriend who lives in Rome.   We had the luxury of flying Virgin Atlantic upper class by buying an economy ticket and upgrading with American Express miles.

I “decided” that during my vacation I would (again) try Chantix; I would continue to smoke in Italy but that when I left I would quit. Obviously the long flight home would prevent me from smoking for many hours. It seemed like a good plan.

We had a fabulous vacation in Italy and I enjoyed my cigarettes.  When we departed Rome, I had my pathetic rushed smoker’s cigarette outside the airline terminal.  And we made our way through the airport maze to for our connecting flight to London.

Once we arrived, I was anxiously planning on having my next cigarette in London which would hopefully be my last.  But first things first: we went through security, found our terminal and made our way to the Virgin Atlantic upper class lounge.

I had never experienced such an incredible airport lounge.  There are showers, a bar, and a restaurant menu.  There is even a spa for those who plan ahead and the treatments are complimentary. My friend and I settled in and of course I was still anxious to have my last cigarette.  But we ordered something to eat and a drink and I found myself in airport heaven.  I had quit smoking, why would I leave airport heaven to have a cigarette and then have to navigate security all over again?  It just wasn’t worth it and that’s how Virgin Atlantic helped me quit smoking.
